Louisiana Tech capped its perfect play in the Western Athletic Conference with another tournament title.
Cheryl Ford grabbed a conference-record 25 rebounds and Trina Frierson scored 18 points on Saturday at Tulsa, Okla., as the No. 6 Lady Techsters defeated Fresno State, 89-57, to win their second WAC tournament.
Louisiana Tech (29-2) won its 27th in a row to extend the nation’s longest winning streak. The Lady Techsters went 18-0 in the conference during the regular season.
Louisiana Tech led by as many as 35 in the second half.
Fresno State (19-12) was outmuscled and outsized. The Bulldogs shot only 28% from the field, going four for 16 from three-point range, and were outrebounded, 56-41.
No. 5 Texas 67, No. 8 Texas Tech 57 -- Stacy Stephens emerged from her slump to help the Longhorns rally to win the Big 12 tournament title at Dallas.
Texas (25-5) trailed most of the game and was down by nine points with just under 14 minutes left, looking nothing like the team that came in with a 12-game winning streak.
But Heather Schreiber scored six consecutive points for the Longhorns, then Stephens scored the next eight. Texas senior guard Tai Dillard finished the 16-3 run with a basket to put the Longhorns ahead, 57-51. They never trailed again.
Freshman point guard Erin Grant scored 18 points to lead the Red Raiders (26-5).
