This Filly Is at Home on Turf

Share

There’s one thing cheap horses at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields get to do that their counterparts in this part of the state do not.

Specifically, race on the turf. Good thing for No Peso No Dance. A winner only once in 11 starts on the main track, the 4-year-old Emerald Jig filly has flourished on the grass.

Bred in California by Joe Turner, No Peso No Dance has won half of her eight races over the surface and has been second in two of her losses. She has won two in a row and three of her last four and will try for another victory in today’s seventh at Golden Gate Fields.

A winner against $6,250 claimers by three lengths over a course listed as good Feb. 28, No Peso No Dance will be making her debut for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. She is moved up the $12,500 level by Hollendorfer. Jockey Roberto Gonzalez will stay put.

Race of the day: Van Rouge, who was third in a sprint prep behind downhill specialists Thunder Bullet and Devil’s Horn, will try for his third career victory in today’s seventh at one mile on the Santa Anita turf course.

Who’s hot: Larry Jones. The trainer won with nine of his first 33 starters at Oaklawn Park.

Who’s not: Dewaine Loy. The trainer lost with 58 of his first 60 runners at Oaklawn Park.

Exotically speaking: A pick four at Santa Anita singling Welcome Aboard in the fifth, Mon Bebe, Angel On Track, Smilin Susan, Being With You and Bonnie Brighton in the sixth, singling Van Rouge in the seventh and Knockout Crown, Distinctive Flyer and Cryptoscript in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 4/185. Money: Previous day/meet total: $21.40/$1,043.80. Total money bet: $1,132.
