Reward Offered in Case of Cat Rescued From Watery Grave
Two animal advocacy groups are offering a combined $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who placed a cat in a pet carrier, weighed it down with rocks and threw it into the ocean near Ventura.
“We’ve seen a lot of horrid things, but this is a first for me,” said Tom Dewar, of the Humane Society of Ventura County.

Humane Society official -- An article in some editions of Tuesday’s California section about a reward in an animal-cruelty case misidentified a Humane Society of Ventura County official. He is Tim Dewar, not Tom Dewar.
The cat, named Sandy by the Humane Society staff, was found alive in the carrier floating off San Buenaventura State Beach on May 6. A caller alerted the Humane Society after spotting the carrier in the water.
Humane Society officer Ron Willis retrieved the cat -- a female, Himalayan-mix -- from a beach maintenance crew that had recovered the carrier. She remains in protective custody pending an investigation.
The Humane Society has offered a $1,500 reward for information in the case. In addition, Virginia-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has offered a $1,000 reward.
