Brohawn Put on 15-Day Disabled List

Reliever Troy Brohawn was put on the 15-day disabled list because of rotator-cuff tendinitis before Tuesday night’s game, eliminating the need for a potentially sticky roster move this weekend.

Steve Colyer was recalled from triple-A Las Vegas and was in the Dodger bullpen Tuesday night but the left-hander probably will be sent back down when reliever Paul Shuey, who will make a rehabilitation appearance for Las Vegas on Thursday, is activated off the disabled list Saturday or Sunday.

Had Brohawn not injured his shoulder in the ninth inning Monday night, when he gave up three runs and two hits against the Braves, the Dodgers would have had three options for clearing roster space for Shuey, none very attractive.

They could have demoted Brohawn, who is 2-0 with a 3.86 earned-run average in 12 appearances, and risked losing the valuable left-hander to another team because he is out of options and would have to clear waivers before being sent to triple-A.

They could have released seldom-used long-reliever Andy Ashby, eaten the rest of his $8-million contract and lost the insurance the right-hander provides in case a starting pitcher is injured.

They could have sent utility player Larry Barnes to Las Vegas and gone with a 12-man pitching staff, a move that would leave the bench short a player.

But with Brohawn, who underwent an MRI test Tuesday afternoon, out for several weeks -- the injury will be treated with therapy, but there is some concern he might need surgery -- the move to activate Shuey is complication-free.

The timing of Brohawn’s injury seems convenient -- teams have been known to fabricate injuries when faced with a roster crunch--but General Manager Dan Evans said the injury is legitimate.

“There was no tweaking of the voodoo doll on this one,” Evans said. “Troy was hurting [Monday] night. He was in a lot of pain.”

Atlanta first baseman Robert Fick had his glove stolen by a woman wearing a Dodger jersey while signing autographs near the Brave dugout after Monday night’s game.

“I had my glove on a chair next to me, and this kid goes, ‘Did you tell that lady she could take your glove?’ ” Fick said. “I was like, ‘Dude, you let her take my glove? That was my gamer.’ I have another glove, but it’s just not the same. It takes a couple of weeks to get it game-ready.”

Shuey, out since April 25 because of a sprained right knee, threw 30 pitches of live batting practice Tuesday.... Utility player Mike Kinkade jammed the ring finger on his left hand diving back to first base Monday night and was unavailable Tuesday.
