Tennis

Guillermo Coria beat fellow Argentine Agustin Calleri, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, to win the Hamburg Masters at Germany for the second ATP Tour title of his career.

Coria, seeded 12th, was in control throughout the final, relentlessly chasing down shots and making few errors.

Calleri was 24-7 on clay this year heading into the match, but he had 48 unforced errors to Coria’s 12.

Coria lost only one set all week at this $2.4-million tournament, a major tuneup for the French Open, which starts May 26.

“There are many favorites for Paris, but that’s a tournament that always has many upsets,” Coria said. “If I play at the level I’ve been playing the last few weeks, I can do well.

“My confidence is very high now, and I hope I’ll still be playing in the second week in Paris.”

Coria, 21, picked up his first title since winning at Vina del Mar in 2001 -- the same year his career was put on hold by a seven-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance.

James Blake, Todd Martin and Mardy Fish combined to lead the United States past Spain, 2-1, in round-robin play in the clay-court World Team Cup at Dusseldorf, Germany.

Blake lost to 1998 French Open champion Carlos Moya, 7-6 (2), 7-5; Martin beat Alex Corretja, 6-3, 6-4, and then Blake paired with Fish to win the doubles match against Corretja and Fernando Vicente, 6-2, 7-6 (9).

In another matchup, the Czech Republic beat top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt and Australia, 2-1.

David Sanchez of Spain beat Markus Hipfl of Austria, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round of the Raiffeisen Grand Prix at St. Poelten, Austria.

Also, Davide Sanguinetti of Italy defeated Sargis Sargsian of Armenia, 6-3, 6-4.

Florida finally won the NCAA women’s tennis title on its home court, beating two-time defending champion Stanford, 4-3, at Gainesville, Fla.

After an 84-minute lightning delay, the second-seeded Gators (31-2) beat the top-seeded Cardinal (25-2) when Lauren Barnikow hit a forehand into the net on match point to give Julie Rotondi a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles.

Florida had played host to the NCAA championships four times before and never won, losing to Stanford in the finals in 1990 and 1999.

It was Florida’s fourth NCAA team championship but the first under second-year Coach Roland Thornqvist, who replaced Andy Brandi. Brandi led the Gators to the semifinals or better in 14 of his last 15 years before retiring.

Allie Sullivan took advantage of a failed defensive clearance and scored from 16 yards out as the San Diego Spirit (2-1-3) secured a 1-1 tie with the Boston Breakers (3-2-2) at San Diego in a Women’s United Soccer Assn. match.

Shannon MacMillan, a San Diego forward who also plays for the U.S. national team, collapsed in the eighth minute during a Boston scoring run. She was reaching for a free ball with her left leg while planting with her right, which buckled and sent her to the ground.

MacMillan, who is expected to play a major role for the U.S. in the Women’s World Cup this fall, will have an MRI exam to determine the extent of the injury. Dagny Mellgren scored the Breakers’ goal.

Theresa Sherry’s goal with about 1 1/2 minutes left in overtime at Syracuse, N.Y., gave Princeton an 8-7 victory over Virginia for its second consecutive NCAA women’s lacrosse championship.

Unranked Glen Johnson won the vacant U.S. Boxing Assn. light-heavyweight championship with a unanimous 12-round decision over sixth-ranked Eric Harding at New York.
