Minnesota Twin first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz will not go on the disabled list after spraining his left ankle over the weekend.

Mientkiewicz will stay in Minnesota for treatment while the Twins play a three-game series at Oakland, starting tonight. He will join the Twins at Seattle on Friday for the start of a three-game series.

Mientkiewicz injured the ankle against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday when he stepped on Joe Crede’s foot while trying to retreat to third base in the second inning.

Manager Ron Gardenhire initially said he expected to put Mientkiewicz on the 15-day disabled list, but Mientkiewicz’s arguments and the advice of his coaches apparently made him reconsider.

Gary Ward was fired as hitting coach of the struggling White Sox and replaced by Greg Walker.

Ward’s dismissal came late Sunday night after Chicago lost three consecutive games at Minnesota, scoring six runs in the series.

Ward was hired two years ago after Von Joshua was fired.

The White Sox are batting .249 this season, 12th among the 14 American League teams, and are batting .232 with runners in scoring position. They have scored 173 runs in 43 games.

Walker had been the hitting coach for the White Sox’s triple-A affiliate at Charlotte.

Philadelphia Phillie reliever Rheal Cormier appealed the $750 fine he received for throwing two inside pitches at Toronto pitcher Roy Halladay in a March 26 exhibition game.

Cormier is scheduled to meet today with Bob DuPuy, baseball’s president and chief operating officer, in the commissioner’s office at New York.

Cormier drew a warning after the second inside pitch to Halladay, who had beaned Phillie slugger Jim Thome the previous inning.

Phillie Manager Larry Bowa was ejected after yelling at Halladay, causing both benches to empty. Bowa was suspended for one game and served it April 8 against Atlanta.

Cormier has denied throwing at Halladay and blamed it on pitching out of the windup for the first time in at least six years.
