Resurreccion’s 66 Wins Golf Regional

Long Beach Poly freshman Alex Resurreccion shot a career-best six-under 66 Monday at Mesquite golf course in Palm Springs to earn medalist honors at the Southern Section Central Regional individual boys’ golf playoff.

Resurreccion, who qualified as the sixth-place golfer in the Moore League, had eight birdies and two bogeys in his round. Teammate Art Golden shot 68 and tied for second with Scott Conway of Paloma Valley and Phil Telliard of Riverside Poly.

Josh Wooding of Riverside Poly, the defending Southern Section Individual champion, shot 70 and is among the top 24 players that advance to the section finals May 27 at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.

Craig Woods of Compton Dominguez, one of the top hurdlers in the state, has signed a letter of intent with California.

Woods, who won the 110-meter hurdles and the 300 intermediates in the Arcadia Invitational in April, has bests of 14.43 seconds in the former and 37.50 in the latter.

Woods’ time in the 300 hurdles is the fastest in the state this year.

* Amy Mayrhofer, a center fielder for Garden Grove Pacifica, to Eastern Kentucky.

* Jessica Owen, a 6-foot middle blocker for the Los Alamitos girls’ volleyball team, to UC Riverside.

* Ashley VanderBloomen, a 5-3 back-row specialist for the Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley girls’ volleyball team, to Idaho State.

* Tyler Hagstrom, a 6-1 outside hitter for the Fountain Valley boys’ volleyball team, to Cal Baptist.

Theresa Boucher of Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula was the overall Western champion and Mary Gardiner of Los Alamitos Oak Middle School was the overall English champion for the Orange County Interscholastic Equestrian League.

Santa Margarita won the team title, with San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s second.

Lauren Stacner of Fullerton Troy was the reserve champion in Western and Megan White of Rancho Santa Margarita St. John’s Episcopal School was the reserve champion in English.

Scott Morrison, a wide receiver on La Verne Damien’s 1982 Southern Section Eastern Conference co-championship team, has been named Spartan football coach, replacing Mark Pasquarella, who left for Glendora.

Morrison returned to his alma mater as an assistant football coach from 1987-91.

He left Damien for Stockton St. Mary’s, where he was an assistant football coach from 1991-97 and head baseball coach from 1995-98. He has been the head football coach at Marin Catholic since 1998.

In other coaching news:

* Randy Blankenship, who led Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley to a 1-9 record last fall in his only season as football coach, has been hired as athletic director at Madera High in the Central Valley.

* Chris Yoakum, an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Encino Crespi the last five years, has been selected coach at Santa Monica St. Monica. Yoakum, 34, replaces Jeff Tintle, who resigned.

* Jon Korfas, a standout basketball player at Santa Barbara San Marcos in the early 1980s and a professional player for 14 years in Greece, is the new boys’ basketball coach at Santa Ynez High, where he replaces Cris Avery, who resigned.

* Jason Negro has been approved as the new football coach at Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills by the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. Negro, 29, was an assistant coach at Trabuco Hills the last two years and has been an assistant coach at Bellflower St. John Bosco. He replaces Bill Crow, who resigned in March.

* Brett Paton, a member of Lake Forest El Toro’s 1982 Southern Section Central Conference championship football team, has been hired as the Chargers’ coach. A defensive coordinator at El Toro the last four seasons, he replaces Mark Flippin, who resigned after one season.

* Kevin Pola has been hired as football coach at Santa Ana Century. Pola played running back and linebacker at Santa Ana High, leading the Saints to the Sunset League title in 1991. He replaces Marty Albert, who was relieved of his football coaching duties last month.

* Mark Wipf will be Claremont’s new boys’ basketball coach, pending school board approval. Wipf, who most recently coached at Avondale (Ariz.) Agua Fria and won a girls’ Oregon state basketball championship in 1993, replaces walk-on coach Sal Magallanes.

* Kurt Ruth will resign as Carson’s baseball coach after the current season, his third on the job, and this fall will be teaching English at Vista Murrieta, a new school opening in Murrieta Valley. Ruth said he is making the move for personal reasons.

* Ed Taylor has resigned as girls’ basketball coach at Pomona Diamond Ranch to take over as the Panthers’ boys’ varsity coach. Taylor had coached the girls’ team since the school opened in 1997.

* Steve Teal, an English teacher at Brea Olinda, has been named boys’ soccer coach, replacing Matt Swindle, who resigned. Swindle had led the Wildcats to 10 league titles and the Southern Section Division III championship in 2001.

* Laguna Beach water polo Coach Larry Zubrin has been hired to lead Occidental College’s men’s and women’s water polo programs. He replaces Dennis Fosdick, who died of cancer in February.
