More Than One Tragedy in Athlete’s Death

Re “$900,000 Message in Athlete’s Death,” Oct. 22:

The drowning death of 18-year-old Victor Brown is truly a tragic story. A water safety expert hired by the family states that this death was easily preventable.

I agree, but it would not necessarily have been prevented by more lifeguards on duty; it could, however, have been prevented by teaching this talented athlete how to swim.

This was not a 5-year-old slipping into a backyard pool. This was an adult who should have been taught water safety at an early age and who should have known his limitations around open water.

The family is noble for using the settlement for athletic track and field scholarships.

An equal share of the settlement should be used for water safety instruction in their community.
