From Times Staff Reports
For the first time in five years, the percentage of Los Angeles County adults who smoke cigarettes has dropped, according to a county health survey.
Based on telephone interviews with a random sample of more than 8,000 people, the Department of Health Services found that about 15.6% of adults smoke, down from 18% reported in 1997 and 1999. One-fifth of the men surveyed smoke, while 11% of the women do.
