Four pedestrians were injured Monday afternoon when a car jumped a curb near downtown Los Angeles and hit people, cars and a fruit cart, police said.
Two pedestrians were hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening, Los Angeles Police Sgt. David Krempa said. The other two were treated at the scene.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and felony hit and run, police said.
The accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. on Vermont Avenue near 9th Street when the driver hit another car, “careened onto the sidewalk, hit the pedestrians, then hit the fruit cart, another car and ended up on the sidewalk,” Krempa said. “Then he took off running.”
The owner of the fruit cart, Saul Carbajal, said he pushed his wife out of the way when he saw the car coming, then chased the driver when he ran.
Firefighters took custody of the suspect and handed him over to police, Krempa said.
