Idaho Fullback Is Out of the Hospital

Idaho fullback Keith Greer, a former Santa Ana Mater Dei standout who fought for his life after complications developed following surgery for a broken leg he sustained Aug. 30 against Washington State, has been released from Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Vandal Coach Tom Cable said doctors expect Greer to make a full recovery. Greer, a sophomore, developed acute respiratory distress syndrome after his Aug. 31 operation.

Tennessee reserve center Chuck Prugh remained in critical condition at a Knoxville, Tenn., hospital with an unknown illness.

Injury updates: Texas El Paso quarterback Jordan Palmer, the brother of former USC quarterback Carson Palmer, will be out three or four weeks because of a hairline fracture of a shinbone.... David Alston, Kent State’s leading rusher, broke a bone in his left foot and is out for the season.... Michael Robinson will replace Zack Mills (sprained left knee) at quarterback for Penn State against Wisconsin.

The Atlantic Coast Conference, expanding to 11 teams in 2004, came up with a schedule that forces four schools to play all three of the conference’s powers in each of the next two seasons.

Under the plan, Wake Forest, North Carolina State, Virginia and North Carolina will play Miami, Florida State and Virginia Tech. Miami will play Virginia Tech and Florida State, while the Hokies and Seminoles will not meet. The other four teams will play two of the powerhouses home-and-home.

The Mid-American Conference extended an invitation of full membership to Central Florida, effective if the Big East Conference’s planned expansion does not include any MAC schools.

No. 2 Miami (4-0), with a showdown at No. 5 Florida State coming on Oct. 11, plays host to West Virginia (1-3) tonight.
