WHEN UCLA HAS THE BALL

The Bruin running game has been sporadic so far, accumulating 110 yards against Illinois and 127 yards against Oklahoma but managing only 38 against Colorado and 65 against San Diego State, so a still-developing offensive line needs to block more effectively for running backs Manuel White and Tyler Ebell to gain some yards. If quarterback Drew Olson gets time to throw and is accurate, he has four attractive options in wideouts Craig Bragg and Junior Taylor, flanker Ryan Smith and tight end Marcedes Lewis. If Olson falters, Matt Moore, the starter until injuring his left knee in the season opener, could play in relief.

WHEN WASHINGTON HAS THE BALL

Quarterback Cody Pickett, who has completed 84 of 137 passes for 1,010 yards and five touchdowns, and receiver Reggie Williams, a top NFL prospect who has 28 catches for 415 yards and four touchdowns, hog most of the spotlight, but the Huskies, who average 30 points a game, also have established a solid running game with senior tailback Rich Alexis, who has 364 yards and three touchdowns in 78 carries. Washington also has another pass-catching threat in junior wideout Charles Frederick, who has 17 receptions for 190 yards and a touchdown. A hefty Husky offensive line averages 307 pounds.

KEYS TO UCLA VICTORY

Prevent the big play. Pickett set a Pacific 10 Conference record for passing yardage last season, and he’s capable of ruining the Bruins’ afternoon.

Corner Reggie. UCLA needs to take advantage of cornerback Matt Ware’s size, strength and wing span to neutralize Williams, and the other corner, the much smaller Matt Clark, needs to find a way to contain Williams.

Hold that line. The Bruins need a strong first half from reserve defensive tackle Asi Faoa, because Washington is third in the Pac-10 in rushing, and UCLA’s top run-stopper, tackle Rodney Leisle, is suspended for the first half.
