Woods Struggles but Leads by Two

Tiger Woods struggled on the 16th hole Saturday at the American Express Championship in Woodstock, Ga., and had to make an eight-foot putt for double bogey, finishing with a one-under 69 that cut his lead to two strokes.

Woods still leads at eight-under 202. Vijay Singh shot a six-under 64 despite two bogeys over his final five holes. He is at 204.

Tim Herron recovered from a double bogey when his tee shot slammed into a portable toilet to the left of the ninth fairway. He birdied three of the next four holes, finished with a 67 and was three shots behind at 205.

Helen Alfredsson tied the tournament record with an eight-under-par 64 to take the lead after three rounds of the Longs Drugs Challenge at Lincoln, Calif. Alfredsson leads a group of four by one stroke with an 11-under 205.

John Huston made three straight birdies on the back nine and shot a four-under 68 to retain his two-stroke lead after the third round of the Southern Farm Bureau Classic in Madison, Miss.

Motor Racing

David Green passed Bobby Hamilton Jr. in his Pontiac after a restart to win the NASCAR Busch Series Mr. Goodcents 300 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City. The race finished under caution when Hamilton crashed his Ford on the last lap. Kevin Harvick was second in a Chevrolet.

Jimmie Johnson crashed during a practice lap at Kansas Speedway, a day after winning the pole for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Banquet 400. Johnson was not injured but had to switch to a backup car, which will force him to drop to the back of the field for the start of today’s race.

Michael Lewis and Dave Steele won the U.S. Auto Racing tune-up races for November’s Turkey Night Grand Prix in front of 4,859 at Irwindale Speedway.

Tennis

Taylor Dent beat defending champion Paul-Henri Mathieu, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (1), to reach the final of the Kremlin Cup at Moscow. He’ll play Sargis Sargsian, who advanced to his first title match since 1997 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Vince Spadea. ... Second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo will face fourth-seeded Anastasia Myskina in the women’s final. Mauresmo beat third-seeded Elena Dementieva, 6-4, 6-1. Myskina defeated Anna Pistolesi, 6-2, 6-0.

Steffi Graf gave birth in Las Vegas Friday to a girl, Jaz Elle Agassi, the second child for the retired tennis star and her husband, Andre Agassi.

Passings

Bill Cayton, who managed Mike Tyson early in his career and owned one of the biggest collections of old fight films, died Saturday of lung cancer in Larchmont, N.Y. He was 85.
