Steve Shields was traded Sunday by the Boston Bruins to the Florida Panthers, who needed to strengthen their goaltending.

The Bruins received future considerations in the deal that came three days before the season opens.

Shields will replace backup goalie Jani Hurme, who was lost in Friday’s NHL waiver draft. Roberto Luongo is Florida’s starting goalie.

“We had a couple of other options,” Panther General Manager Rick Dudley said. “Shields was at the top of the list.”

The move leaves Boston with goaltenders Andrew Raycroft and Felix Potvin. Potvin, formerly of the Kings, signed as a free agent before training camp.

Shields had a 12-13-9 record and 2.75 goals-against average in 36 games last season.

Denis Hamel was traded to the Ottawa Senators by the Washington Capitals in exchange for future considerations.

The Capitals selected the forward in the NHL waiver draft on Friday.

The Senators signed Hamel as a free agent during the summer.
