Owners of large planes who like to fly late at night have convinced city and Federal Aviation Administration officials to exempt “quiet” planes from curfew hours.

Planes landing from 11:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. at Mineta San Jose International Airport were originally banned according to their size, not the noise they made.

Under the new rules, plane engines that don’t exceed 89 decibels -- the amount of noise made by a lawnmower or hair dryer -- can land during curfew hours, officials said.
