A 9-month-old bear cub released into the wild Thursday is the first graduate of the California Black Bear Rehabilitation Program, run out of Wildhaven Ranch in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Developed in cooperation with the California Department of Fish and Game, the Wildhaven program is the first bear program in Southern California licensed to rescue orphan cubs and train them so they have a second chance at life in the wild.
The center has aided and released hundreds of other kinds of animals since opening in October 2000, Executive Director Diana Dragotto Williams said.
“We probably get 300 animals through here every year,” she said.
