Stanford Going Back to Lewis as Starter

Stanford Coach Buddy Teevens said he’ll start fifth-year senior Chris Lewis at quarterback Saturday against Oregon rather than freshman Trent Edwards.

Lewis was Stanford’s starter -- briefly -- in the opener against San Jose State, but Edwards was impressive in relief and won the starting job.

Edwards suffered a concussion and a shoulder sprain in the third quarter of Stanford’s loss to Washington State last Saturday. Lewis took over and led the Cardinal on a 60-yard scoring drive.

The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported that Clemson officials had to erase pornographic images from Web pages of at least eight players on the university’s server.

Tailback Yusef Kelly and tight end Ben Hall were two of the players identified, but each denied knowledge of placing the images on the pages.

None of the players involved are expected to be disciplined.

NCAA President Myles Brand said he supported the Black Coaches Assn.’s five-part proposal to evaluate Division I-A hiring practices.

“I believe the process should come to resemble that which we have in the university system, for a dean,” Brand said.

The BCA’s goal is to have 20% of all new coaches -- dating to last year -- to be minority hires.

Injury report: Arkansas tailbacks Cedric Cobbs (hamstring) and De’Arrius Howard (ankle) are questionable for Saturday’s game at Mississippi.... Georgia receiver Fred Gibson (bruised knee) and fullback Jeremy Thomas (concussion) are not expected to play against Alabama Birmingham.
