A 21-year-old Ventura man was found shot to death in his home this week after police received a 911 call from an unidentified person who reported the shooting using a cell phone.

Police entered the residence in the 8000 block of Emerald Street about 3:45 p.m. Monday, minutes after receiving the anonymous call, and found Daniel James West lying dead on a bedroom floor with his father apparently attempting to aid him, said Ventura Police Sgt. Sean Conroy.

Police entered the home after getting no response at the front door. West’s father, who was not injured, told police he did not place the 911 call, Conroy said.

Multiple shots had been fired from an unspecified firearm and West suffered two gunshot wounds, Conroy said.

Ventura County Deputy Coroner Craig Stevens said West died as a result of being shot in the head. The shooting is considered a homicide, Stevens said.

The father, Mark West, told police he witnessed two vehicles driving away from the house at the time of the shooting, Conroy said. No suspects have been identified and an investigation is continuing.
