A 25-year-old Los Angeles man was shot to death in a quarrel with his half brother at a family gathering, police said Wednesday.

The 17-year-old half brother, whom police declined to identify, was wounded.

The mother of both young men used her nursing skills to treat them Tuesday night before paramedics arrived at the scene on Halldale Avenue in South Los Angeles, police said.

But when the struggle was over, one son was dead and the other faced probable charges.

The dispute broke out after several family members got together to eat Labor Day barbecue leftovers Tuesday evening, said LAPD Det. Bill Fallon.

The brothers had argued over women before, and after an evening of drinking, the elder, Larry Patrick, had rekindled the quarrel, the detective said. Investigators believe Patrick threatened to kill the youth, Fallon said.

There was shoving, and as the two grappled on the ground, the teenager pulled out a revolver and fired, authorities said.

The bullet went through Patrick and hit the shooter’s arm.
