White Wins in Return to the Track

Kelli White made a winning return to the track Friday, capturing the 100 meters a week after she became embroiled in a drug scandal at the World Championships in France.

The world champion finished in 10.87 seconds and led a 1-2-3 American finish at the Van Damme Memorial meet in Brussels, followed by Chryste Gaines and Tori Edwards.

Maria Mutola of Mozambique won a $1-million bonus, taking the 800 meters (1:57.78) to make it six for six in Golden League races.

After her 100 victory in France, White tested positive for a stimulant. She escaped a suspension that would have kept her out of the Athens Olympics, but she could lose her 100 and 200 gold medals.

Golf

Paul Azinger lost two strokes and a higher spot on the Canadian Open leaderboard when he was penalized because his caddie removed the flagstick from the hole on the 13th green while playing partner Fred Funk’s ball was still in motion. The ruling left Azinger with a two-under-par 68, putting him three strokes behind leader Charles Howell III after the second round at Hamilton.

Gil Morgan shot a seven-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Larry Nelson, Jerry McGee and Bruce Summerhays in the first round of the Kroger Classic, a Champions Tour event, at Maineville, Ohio.... Karrie Webb had birdies on her last four holes for a five-under 65 and a one-stroke lead over Donna Andrews in the first round of the LPGA’s John Q. Hammons Hotel Classic at Tulsa, Okla.

Mark Messier, 42, agreed to terms with the New York Rangers for a 25th NHL season.

Johnny Sauter bumped Matt Kenseth into the wall and out of the way in the final turn at Richmond, Va., ending a wild seven-lap shootout and gaining his second career Busch Series victory.... Mike Skinner, whose lap at 125.792 mph bumped Greg Biffle (125.646 in a Ford) to the outside of the front row, will now start at the back of the field tonight night in the Chevrolet 400 at Richmond after he crashed during a practice session later and was forced to summon a backup car.... NASCAR driver Kurt Busch dropped his assault complaint against rival Jimmy Spencer, who punched him in the face after a race last month at Michigan International Speedway.

USC has been selected by the Cuban Baseball Federation to play in Cuba against the country’s national team during a Jan. 23-28 trip.

The NCAA has stripped the Hawaii men’s volleyball team of its 2002 championship and fined the school $5,000 for using an ineligible player. In a statement, the NCAA said there will be no national champion recorded for 2002. Pepperdine, which lost to Hawaii in the title game, will remain the runner-up.... Abe Thompson’s goal lifted No. 2 Maryland over No. 1 UCLA, 1-0, in a men’s soccer game in front of 6,143 fans at College Park, Md.
