Vargas Hurt, Fight Postponed
Super-welterweight Fernando Vargas, on the comeback trail hoping for a rematch against Oscar De La Hoya, took an unwanted detour Friday when his Oct. 3 tuneup fight was postponed because of a back injury.
Vargas’ match against Tony Marshall at the Casino del Sol in Tucson was put on hold after Vargas injured his lower back in training Wednesday.
The extent of the injury has yet to be determined. Once there is a full diagnosis, a new timetable for Vargas will be determined.
After losing to De La Hoya on an 11th-round TKO a year ago and subsequently serving a nine-month suspension following a positive test for steroids, Vargas returned to the ring in July at the Olympic Auditorium, where he beat journeyman Fitz Vanderpool on a sixth-round TKO.
The plan was for Vargas to have two more fights against light opposition, beginning with Marshall, with the hope De La Hoya-Vargas II could be made for next May.
De La Hoya, faced with a rematch against Shane Mosley next Saturday, hasn’t committed to fighting Vargas.
