Alameda County health officials have reported the county’s second case of West Nile virus.

Anthony Iton, the county health officer, said a 56-year-old woman was diagnosed with the mosquito-borne illness and was being treated at a local hospital for encephalitis.

Iton said the woman contracted the virus in Pennsylvania, where she had traveled.

The unidentified woman was hospitalized Aug. 29 after complaining of fever, headaches and confusion. Iton said the woman’s condition is improving and she probably would be released from the hospital early next week.

Alameda County reported California’s first imported case of the virus Aug. 14. That case was believed to have been imported from Colorado, where the patient had recently vacationed.
