USC Baseball Is Looking Good on Paper

USC baseball Coach Mike Gillespie again must cross his fingers and hope the top high school players who have committed to the Trojans will choose college over the pros.

His latest commitment is power-hitting first baseman Lucas Duda of Riverside Arlington. He joins top pro prospect Trevor Plouffe, a pitcher from Encino Crespi, and infielders Matt Cusick and Doug Reinhardt of Santa Margarita, all of whom plan to sign with USC in November.

A year ago, Gillespie signed Ian Stewart of Westminster La Quinta and JoJo Reyes of Riverside Poly, but both were drafted and ended up accepting professional contracts....

Third baseman Ben Ornelas of Lompoc has committed to Cal State Fullerton....

Even though quarterback Rocky Hinds of Playa del Rey St. Bernard has been lost for the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Coach Greg Dixon said college recruiters are standing by their scholarship offers.

“It’s not affected him at all,” Dixon insisted....

Long Beach Wilson golfer Kim Lorenzana has committed to UC Irvine.
