Cash honored at Viper Room

Shooter Jennings paid tribute to his godfather, Johnny Cash, on Friday night at the Viper Room, a fitting stage for the impromptu memorial of the late, great singer. A decade ago, Cash performed his most intimate set at the Sunset Boulevard nightclub, and Jennings, whose father, Waylon, was one of Cash’s great comrades, performed the Waylon/Cash hit, “Ain’t No Good Chain Gang.” Surely, heaven’s got room for one more outlaw.... We hear Rick Rubin and Dave Grohl were among those who turned out for one of Black Flag’s cat rescue benefits at the Palladium. We also hear the Friday and Saturday night performances were so awful, people demanded their money back. Me-ouch!

Big Daddy’s funky b-day

Join DJ Big Daddy Carlos on Saturday for the second anniversary of Swank, a weekly funk-fest at Three Clubs in Hollywood. And there’s an added bonus: It’s also his birthday.... DJ David Orlando, who spins a hot mix of garage rock at Deluxe in Hollywood each Tuesday, just took the reins on Fridays at the Falls on Sunset Boulevard.... If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow, don’t be alarmed, now, it’s just “Led Zeppelin Karaoke” at the Knitting Factory on Saturday. And speaking of ‘70s supergroups, the Knitting Factory is hosting a tribute night on Sept. 27, featuring Cheap Trick, Black Sabbath, Grand Funk Railroad and Tom Petty cover bands.... Bopped by Nacional in Hollywood on a recent Tuesday and spotted Rod Stewart holding court upstairs. Seems he never gets tired of chicas of the leggy blond variety.... And speaking of variety, Mr. T’s Bowl in Highland Park is hosting a comedy and live performance benefit on Oct. 4 for funnyman Neil Hamburger, who’s plotting to raise money for a comedy film he’s producing.
