Armour Leads After a 62

Tommy Armour III capped a 62 with a birdie on the 18th hole Friday and held a one-stroke lead over Dan Forsman after the second round of the Texas Open.

Armour’s 14-under 126 on the La Cantera Golf Club course in San Antonio is the lowest two-round score on the PGA Tour this year.

Forsman shot a 63 and was one shot ahead of Tim Clark (63). K.J. Choi (62), Tom Lehman (63), Hal Sutton (63), Paul Goydos (64) and Charles Howell (64) were at 11-under 129.

Bob Tway, a co-leader after the first round, shot a 69 to join Loren Roberts (66) and Cameron Beckman (67) at 130. Heath Slocum, who shared the first-round lead with Tway, shot a 70 and is at 131.

Beth Daniel shot a 10-under 62 to take a four-stroke lead after the first round of the Safeway Classic at Portland, Ore., and tie the course record set by defending champion Annika Sorenstam.

Grace Park and Cristie Kerr were tied for second at 66. Sorenstam was another stroke back. Michelle Wie, the 13-year-old amateur star, shot a three-under 69.

Larry Nelson shot an eight-under 64 in the opening round of the Greater Hickory Classic at Conover, N.C., to share the lead with Bruce Fleisher.... Jess Daley shot a nine-under 62 for a two-day total of 11-under 131 and a share of the lead in the Nationwide Tour’s Mark Christopher Charity Classic at Empire Lake Golf Course in Rancho Cucamonga. Daley is tied with James Oh, who shot a 66.

Motor Racing

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has won a record four straight NASCAR Winston Cup races at Talladega Superspeedway, was set to start 10th in Sunday’s EA Sports 500. But his Chevrolet didn’t get by the inspectors, who discovered the right quarter-panel was too low.

Earnhardt’s time was disallowed and he had to take a provisional spot in the 43-car field. He’ll start 38th.

Elliott Sadler won the pole with a run of 189.943 mph in his Ford. Jamie McMurray (189.395) will start beside Sadler on the front row in a Dodge.

Tennis

Second-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne overcame right shoulder pain and a bad back to defeat Els Callens, 6-2, 6-4, and reach the semifinals of the Sparkassen Cup at Leipzig, Germany. Top-seeded Kim Clijsters also advanced by beating Patty Schnyder, 6-1, 6-3.... Fourth-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan was defeated by Ivan Ljubicic, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5, in the quarterfinals of the Thailand Open at Nonthaburi. Ljubicic next faces top-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero, who beat Gregory Carraz, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (2). Third-seeded Carlos Moya was upset by fifth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4. Nieminen will play Taylor Dent, who advanced when Nicolas Thomann withdrew with a right foot injury after losing the first set, 6-3.

Miscellany

Single-game tickets for this season’s Laker games will go on sale next Saturday at 10 a.m. There will be a limit of four tickets per person per game. There are fewer than 1,000 tickets available for each home game.

Tickets will not be sold at the Staples Center box office. Instead, they’ll be available at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com, or by telephone at (800) 462-2849.

Arizona baseball Coach Andy Lopez signed a five-year contract extension after taking the Wildcats to the NCAA playoffs in his second season. Lopez was entering the final year of his original three-year contract.

Jeffrey H. Faul, a jockey at Great Lakes Downs in Muskegon, Mich., has been suspended from racing for six years by a state panel that determined he used an electrical “buzzer” to win a race. The track stewards also fined him $7,500.

Nell Fortner has resigned as coach and general manager of the Indiana Fever after the team failed to make the WNBA playoffs. She was 42-56 in three seasons.
