Poles Apart on Seeking Peace?

“Huntington Beach Accepts ‘Peace Pole’ From Church” (April 7) focused on the church versus state separation issue in the Huntington Beach City Council’s decision to allow a “peace pole” monument to be installed at City Hall. While I agree that is an issue, there is more to be debated.

First, I would be interested to know exactly how driving a 7-foot piece of wood into the ground will contribute to world peace. The article said that more than 200,000 peace poles have been erected in 180 countries since 1975. Is the world a more peaceful place as a result? Maybe something more substantial is required, do you think? What a bunch of metaphysical bunk!

Also, I am amazed that my City Council doesn’t have more important issues to occupy its time and attention than nonsense such as this. Maybe our city is in better condition than I have been led to believe.
