Clemens Displays Sharp Side in Shutting Down Cardinals

Roger Clemens gave up only two hits and extended his scoreless streak to 13 2/3 innings before giving up a run in visiting Houston’s 5-3 victory over St. Louis on Tuesday night.

Clemens (2-0) struck out three, walked three and hit a batter in 6 2/3 innings. Last week in his Houston debut, he gave up one hit in seven shutout innings against San Francisco.

The win was No. 312 for Clemens, moving him past Tom Seaver into 16th place on the career list.

Adam Everett and Lance Berkman hit solo homers for Houston, and Jeff Kent doubled in two runs.

Octavio Dotel gave up consecutive homers to Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen to lead off the ninth, but got the last four outs for his first save of the season.

Clemens, 41, in his first season with his hometown Astros after winning six Cy Young Awards in the American League, threw 105 pitches in shutting down the Cardinals.

Florida 5, Montreal 0 -- Miguel Cabrera hit two more home runs, and Brad Penny gave up only two hits to lead the Marlins at San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Cabrera has four home runs in his last nine at-bats and five this season. The 20-year-old hit solo homers in the first and sixth innings, and had a run-scoring single in the third.
