Man Dies 3 Years After Being Shot in Gang Attack
A man who was shot three years ago at an Anaheim apartment complex in what police describe as a gang-related attack died Thursday, officials said.
Manuel Cervantes, 22, was pronounced dead at his home in Buena Park, officials said. An autopsy Friday was inconclusive and additional tests were being conducted to determine the cause of his death, coroner’s officials said.
The death may be the result of the wounds he suffered in 2001, said Anaheim Police Sgt. Rick Martinez.
Police said Cervantes was shot in the back several times while he was visiting a gang-infested neighborhood April 1, 2001. The shooting left him a paraplegic with numerous other medical problems, police said.
Investigators have been unable to track down the shooter, who could face murder charges if Cervantes’ death is linked to the shooting.
“The victim was not cooperative with police detectives, so we have not been able to find out” who shot him, Martinez said.
