A 21-year-old man was killed Saturday after being hit by his own car on the Costa Mesa Freeway and a suspected drunk driver who caused the accident was arrested, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Philip Ortiz of Lake Forest lost control of his car in the southbound lanes in Orange, just north of the Garden Grove Freeway, and hit a traffic barrier, a CHP dispatcher said.

Ortiz and two passengers got out to inspect the damage.

As Ortiz was returning to his car about 2 a.m., the dispatcher said, a pickup crashed into the car, thrusting it into Ortiz. He was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.
