Larionov Retires at 43

New Jersey Devil center Igor Larionov announced his retirement Monday.

Larionov, 43, the oldest player in the NHL this season, had hoped to win a fourth Stanley Cup to cap a professional career that began in 1980 in the former Soviet Union, but the defending champion Devils were ousted in the first round by Philadelphia.

Larionov had 169 goals and 644 points in 921 regular-season games. He also played for Vancouver, San Jose, Florida and Detroit, winning Stanley Cups with the Red Wings in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

Mighty Duck General Manager Bryan Murray said he would pick up the two-year option on defenseman Keith Carney after Walt Disney Co. officials approved the team’s 2004-05 budget.

The deal will pay Carney nearly $6 million over the next two seasons.

The Ducks also picked up a two-year option on radio play-by-play announcer Steve Carroll.
