Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany

Fox, $40

Extras on DVDs have become predictable -- with “documentaries” that are so short they are geared for viewers with the attention span of a gnat.

There are no such complaints with the seaworthy two-disc set of “Master and Commander.” Peter Weir’s classy, ambitious and immensely entertaining film is about British naval hero Jack Aubrey and his crew of the HMS Surprise as they battle the French in 1805.

Though Weir, who received his fourth best director Oscar nomination for “Master,” does not offer a commentary track, he is front and center in “The Hundred Days,” a fascinating documentary on this mammoth production. Weir also discusses the arduous task of adapting Patrick O’Brian’s books in another hearty documentary, “In the Wake of O’Brian.” Other goodies include six deleted scenes, art galleries, split-screen vignettes and a look at the complex sound design.

The Haunted Mansion

Eddie Murphy, Terence Stamp

Disney, $30

Eddie Murphy seems to be sleepwalking through this horror comedy. He plays an ambitious real estate agent whose family gets more than they bargained for when they find themselves at a haunted mansion.

Disney’s third film based on one of its famous Disneyland attractions, “Haunted Mansion” scores in the production and costume design departments. Rick Baker’s zombies are scary, and Terence Stamp seems to be enjoying himself as a ghostly butler. Little kids, however, may find the whole affair too creepy.

The disc incudes a standard making-of documentary, slickly showcased bloopers, one deleted scene and a virtual tour of the mansion. The two commentary tracks are geared toward older viewers.

Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!

Kate Bosworth, Topher Grace

DreamWorks, $27

Director Robert Luketic (“Legally Blonde”) imbues this light variation on the “Bye Bye Birdie” theme with charm and a dash of pathos. Despite the attractive cast, the film was a box office disappointment. The quickly released DVD has only deleted scenes and outtakes.

A League of Their Own

Geena Davis, Tom Hanks

Columbia TriStar, $25

The women who played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II finally got their due with director Penny Marshall’s entertaining 1992 comedy. Geena Davis and Lori Petty play sisters from a small town in Oregon who join the new league, along with Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell and others. Jon Lovitz is a wisecracking scout. Tom Hanks plays the manager, a former slugger whose career was sidelined by the bottle.

The two-disc DVD set includes a funny 52-minute retrospective documentary, some enjoyable deleted scenes and commentary from Marshall, Petty, Rob Reiner and Megan Cavanagh, who was a waitress at Ed Debevic’s when she got the role.
