A Ventura County Jail inmate who escaped from a work assignment in Camarillo last week was apprehended during a traffic stop in Arizona, authorities said Monday.

David Wayne Echols, 20, was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by police in El Mirage near Phoenix on Friday after the driver had thrown a cigarette out the window, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

After conducting a background check, police found a felony warrant for Echols’ arrest in Ventura County and a warrant for failing to appear in court in Arizona on an unrelated drug charge.

Echols is to be returned to Ventura County, pending his court case in Arizona, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Echols walked away from his job Wednesday at the sheriff’s aviation unit at Camarillo Airport.

He is being held at Maricopa County Jail.
