Red Sox Power Past White Sox

Curt Schilling yielded three hits in seven shutout innings for his 15th win, and Manny Ramirez hit a grand slam to lead the Boston Red Sox over the White Sox, 10-1, Friday night at Chicago.

Orlando Cabrera homered and drove in four runs for the Red Sox, who moved to within 7 1/2 games of the first-place New York Yankees in the East Division, the closest they have been since July 30.

Ramirez’s 31st homer of the season was the 16th slam of his career, tying Robin Ventura of the Dodgers for the most among active players.

Schilling (15-6) walked none and struck out six.

Texas 5, Kansas City 3 -- David Dellucci hit two solo home runs, and Kevin Mench had a three-run shot, powering the Rangers at Kansas City, Mo., for their seventh consecutive win.

Ryan Drese (11-6) yielded three runs and five hits in seven-plus innings. He is 7-1 in his last eight starts.

Minnesota 5, Cleveland 1 -- Kyle Lohse (6-10) pitched three-hit ball for seven innings at Minnesota to help the Central Division-leading Twins move five games ahead of the second-place Indians, while handing them their fifth loss in a row.

Oakland 9, Tampa Bay 5 -- At St. Petersburg, Fla., Eric Chavez homered twice to help the West Division-leading Athletics win their fourth in a row and move a season-high 17 games above .500 at 69-52.

Detroit 8, Seattle 3 -- Nate Robertson (10-7) pitched seven solid innings at Detroit. He gave up two runs and six hits, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

Ichiro Suzuki was back in the Mariner lineup after leaving Wednesday night’s game against Kansas City when he was hit in the head by a pitch. He had three hits in four at-bats.

Toronto 14, Baltimore 4 -- At Baltimore, Chris Woodward hit his first career grand slam to help the Blue Jays, who had lost four in a row, improve to 3-8 under interim Manager John Gibbons.
