State’s Tourism Decline May Be Self-Inflicted

Share

Regarding “State’s Travel Expectations Hit a Roadblock” (Aug. 8):

I would like to offer the perspective that there is some correlation between the decline in travel to and within our Golden State and the elimination of its travel and tourism budget.

Other than the funds generated by the industry itself (via self-assessment), we have zero dollars to keep our tourism marketing activities alive and well. We are the only state in the nation to have no tourism budget.

This situation began in the later stages of the Davis administration and continues despite the numbers showing the immense revenue benefits to the state for every dollar invested in promoting tourism.
