HAWAII BOWL

Alabama Birmingham (7-4) vs. Hawaii (7-5) 4, ESPN

* Line: Hawaii by 3 1/2 .

* Series Record: First meeting.

* Bowl Records: Alabama Birmingham’s first bowl, Hawaii is 3-2.

* Last Bowl Appearance: Hawaii defeated Houston, 54-48, in triple overtime in the 2003 Hawaii Bowl.

* What to Watch: It’s the final game for Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang, who set the NCAA record for career passing yardage. He can add to his total of 16,667 against Alabama Birmingham’s pass defense, which at times has been questionable. Despite his gaudy numbers, Chang (3,853 yards, 34 touchdowns) can be erratic. He has completed 59% of his passes but has 13 interceptions. Hawaii receiver Chad Owens leads the Warriors with 94 catches for 1,176 yards and 15 touchdowns. Alabama Birmingham has a standout receiver in Roddy White. With 65 catches, he has 46 more than the Blazers’ second-leading receiver, and his 13 touchdowns represent over half of the 24 touchdown passes thrown by Darrell Hackney. Alabama Birmingham’s ground game is led by Dan Burks, who has 825 yards, and Corey White, who has 536.

* Note: The Warriors’ only home loss was to Florida Atlantic in September. ... White is a third-team All-American; Owens made the second team as an all-purpose player. He has returned four punts for scores this season. ... Hawaii is playing a bowl game on its home field for the third year in a row. ... The Blazers have played in Division I-A since 1996 and were bowl eligible in 2000 and 2001, but didn’t get an invitation.
