A gunman accosted five teenagers looking for a party in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, killing two of them and wounding two others as they tried to drive away, police said Sunday.

The young people arrived in two cars in the 3100 block of West Adams Boulevard shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, and got out to look for a party they believed was being held in the area, said Los Angeles Police Officer Lucy Diaz.

But as they left their cars, a man appeared, drew a handgun and demanded an article of clothing from one of them. They scrambled back into one of the cars as the man opened fire.

He killed a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, one of whom died at the scene and the other at a hospital, police said. One of the wounded teens was hospitalized but expected to survive, and the other was treated and released, Diaz said. None of the victims’ names was released.

The gunman was described as a black male about 18 to 20 years old, 5 feet 10 to 6 feet tall, and weighing about 200 pounds. He may be driving a light-colored sport utility vehicle, possibly a Ford Explorer. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (213) 485-2417.
