Some pre-Grammy events open to public

A performance by the Gibson/Baldwin High School Jazz Ensembles tonight will launch the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences’ week of activities leading up to Sunday’s Grammy Awards. While most of the events, including Friday’s MusiCares fundraising gala and a reception for the nominees on Saturday, are private, four are open to the public.

Kurt Elling will be the special guest at tonight’s performance, which gathers high school jazz singers and instrumentalists from around the country. The show is at 8:30 p.m. at Catalina Bar & Grill, 6725 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood. Information: (323) 466-2210.

On Wednesday, Weird Al Yankovic, Peter Bergman, Jon Lovitz, Bob Saget and others will appear at the Grammy Foundation’s “Salute to Comedy.” The 9 p.m. evening of stand-up comedy will be held at the Laugh Factory, 8001 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, with proceeds benefiting the Grammy Foundation. Two more shows with the high school jazz ensembles will be held: Friday (with guest Chick Corea) at 7 p.m. at the Knitting Factory Hollywood, 7021 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, (323) 443-0204; and Saturday (with Eric Marienthal, David Benoit and Craig Chaquico) at 11:30 a.m. on the Endless Dreams Yacht at Rainbow Harbor, Long Beach (562) 596-2199.

Sunday’s Grammy Awards ceremonies at Staples Center will be televised by CBS, with the tape-delayed airing scheduled for 8 p.m.
