A 49-year-old farmworker was hit and killed by a Metrolink train Wednesday morning as he attempted to cross the tracks on 5th Street in Oxnard.

Emiliano Vicente Martinez of Oxnard was killed after he stepped into the path of the commuter train near Rose Avenue shortly before 6:30 a.m., police said.

Martinez was on his way to work, officials said.

Metrolink spokeswoman Sharon Gavin said she did not know how fast the train was traveling but that the track speed limit at the accident site is 79 mph.
