A 38-year-old Ventura County Jail inmate was on life-support systems late Thursday after attempting to hang himself in his cell, authorities said.

Manuel Roa of Oxnard had tied a shredded bed sheet to an upper-bunk bed frame and attempted to hang himself about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said. Another inmate returning from a court appearance spotted Roa and called for help.

Deputies immediately cut him down and began administering aid, authorities said. Roa was transferred to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.
