When Sam Farmer, The Times’ pro football writer, was in Houston for the Super Bowl, members of the band Aerosmith were staying on the same floor of the hotel.

Farmer said that late in the week he, his father and his brother went out in the hall to find someone to take a family picture and spotted the band at the elevator.

“Would you mind taking a picture?” Farmer asked.

When they hesitated and looked at each other, Farmer said, “No, I mean, will you take our picture?”

One of the band members was happy to oblige.

“I don’t think they get many requests to take other people’s pictures,” Farmer said.

Trivia time: What current local professional basketball coach played alongside Julius Erving, Isiah Thomas, Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon during his NBA career?

Not totally forgotten: Although Marge Hearn was not invited to attend Sunday’s NBA All-Star game, she did get one party invitation.

She and close friend Susan Stratton, a Channel 9 executive producer, attended a Hall of Fame breakfast Saturday morning, where they sat with a group of young men.

“They told us they make retro jerseys,” Hearn said. “They were very nice and invited us to a rock ‘n’ roll party that night. I thought, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s me.’ ”

More culture clash: At the NBA’s Legends of the Game brunch Sunday, Commissioner David Stern introduced the emcee, comedian Sinbad.

“I’d say, ‘Give it up for Sinbad,’ but that’s not me,” Stern said. “So how about a nice round of applause for Sinbad.”

Bare barbs: Regarding the reports that Colorado recruits were entertained by strippers, Jim Litke of Associated Press wrote that the scandal “gives new meaning to the nickname Buffs.”

And this from John Bialas of the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald: “Is there an NCAA limit on recruiting strips?”

The wrong Guerrero: Joel Sherman of the New York Post, on the Mets’ signing of pitcher Scott Erickson: “Met fans craved Mr. Vladimir Guerrero. They will have to settle for Mr. Lisa Guerrero.”

Erickson and Guerrero were married the day before he signed with the Mets.

Looking back: On this day in 1940, Seabiscuit finished a distant second in the San Carlos Handicap at Santa Anita. Seabiscuit rebounded a week later with a victory in the San Antonio Handicap and then capped his career by winning the Santa Anita Handicap on March 2.

Trivia answer: Earl Cureton of the Long Beach Jam of the ABA. He played for Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, the Clippers, Charlotte, Houston and Toronto during his 13-year NBA career.

And finally: If Bud Selig were the commissioner of the NBA and the East had held on to win the All-Star game, the Eastern Conference champion would automatically have gained home-court advantage in the NBA Finals.
