Charlie Fox, 82, the 1971 National League manager of the year with the San Francisco Giants, died Monday night at Stanford Hospital of complications from pneumonia.

San Francisco won the National League West title under Fox in 1971, with a record of 90-72, before losing to Pittsburgh in the league championship series. Fox managed the Giants from 1970 to 1974, finishing with a record of 348-327.

He also had short stints as manager of the Montreal Expos and the Chicago Cubs. Fox also served as general manager of the Expos, and as a coach for the New York Yankees -- he was fired by owner George Steinbrenner when manager Dallas Green was let go. His final job in the big leagues was as a scout for the Houston Astros from 1990 to 1993.
