Single-Minded Bettors Might Like the Eighth

Today’s racing begins at Santa Anita with a $179,159 pick six carry-over, thanks primarily to Mythical Flyer’s $33.20 upset in Monday’s fifth race.

Miss Mark could be a popular single in the eighth and final. Claimed by trainer Paul Aguirre for owner Marty Ladin out of a fourth-place finish against $40,000 California-bred maiden fillies on Jan. 24, the 3-year-old daughter of Benchmark surfaces for $32,000 today. Miss Mark is clearly the speed of the field.

Tricky Little Girl, who finished a length ahead of Miss Mark, came back to break her maiden on Monday, and Silent Kingdom, the filly Miss Mark battled for the lead through 21 4/5 and 44 4/5 fractions, returned to win a route race by daylight.

The pick six begins with a $52,000 optional claimer for 3-year-old state-bred fillies. The probable favorite in the field of seven is Allswellthatnswell, a daughter of Perfect Mandate who won by seven lengths in her sprint debut. She is trained by Ted H. West.

Race of the day: Mr. Shoplifter, who showed some promise as a 4-year-old in 2003, will make his first start of the year for trainer Allen Jerkens in today’s eighth at Aqueduct. Ray Ganpath will ride the son of Devil’s Bag, who beat maidens by 4 1/4 lengths on March 21 at Gulfstream Park, in the $43,000 allowance at six furlongs.

One for the road: Serendipitous is a first-time starter in today’s sixth at Gulfstream for trainer H. James Bond, who does well with rookies. The Pleasant Tap filly has trained well at Palm Meadows, and Edgar Prado will ride in the $32,000 maiden affair at about 1 1/8 miles on the turf.

Exotically speaking: A place pick all, using Tell No Tales in the first, Sweet Rhapsody in the second, Allswellthatnswell and She’s No General in the third, Linda Belinda in the fourth, Home Tour, Beach Pizza and Wild Glory in the fifth, Ela Ela in the sixth, Rhythm Mad, Soud and Academy Spy in the seventh, and Miss Mark in the eighth.
