Stars Finally Get Past the Avalanche

The Dallas Stars made the most of their final regular-season shot at the Colorado Avalanche.

Jason Arnott scored three goals and Pierre Turgeon had a power-play goal and an assist as the Stars beat the Avalanche for the first time this season, 5-1, Friday night at Dallas.

The Stars, 10-3-2 in their last 15 games, had been outscored by the Avalanche, 11-3, in their first three games.

Detroit 5, St. Louis 1 -- Henrik Zetterberg had two power-play goals and an assist at Detroit to help the Red Wings win for the sixth time in seven games. Detroit captain Steve Yzerman played in the 1,432nd game of his career. That ties him with Mike Gartner for 14th on the all-time list.

Buffalo 4, Tampa Bay 3 -- Daniel Briere scored 3:01 into overtime for the Sabres at Buffalo, N.Y.

The victory spoiled Dave Andreychuk’s big night. He scored two power-play goals, including the 265th of his career to regain the all-time league lead.

Brett Hull scored his 263rd on Wednesday.

Florida 2, Pittsburgh 0 -- Roberto Luongo stopped 34 shots for his 20th career shutout and the Panthers extended the Penguins’ home losing streak to 13 games. In all, they have lost 17 in a row.

Phoenix 3, Columbus 2 -- Daymond Langkow scored the game-winning goal with 19 seconds left, turning a rebound of his own shot to his forehand and wristing the puck just under the crossbar. The win, coupled with a 3-2 win over Dallas in their last home game, gave the Coyotes their first winning streak in the new Glendale Arena.

Philadelphia Flyer center Jeremy Roenick is undergoing more tests for a severe concussion, one week after getting hit by a puck and breaking his jaw. He was hurt early in the third period of a victory over the New York Rangers when he was struck by a shot by New York’s Boris Mironov. Roenick had surgery to repair his broken jaw, but the concussion is more serious. He told the Philadelphia Inquirer that a neurologist in Arizona advised him to get an MRI exam on his brain stem.

Minnesota Wild forward Matt Johnson was suspended for five games and fined $32,361 by the NHL for slashing Vancouver’s Matt Cooke. Johnson received a match penalty in the third period of Thursday night’s 6-2 Wild victory after slashing Cooke across the chest.
