A Santa Fe family legacy

Share

Staff writer Craig Nakano’s “Santa Fe’s Spirit” was a gift to me and my family. On Christmas Eve 1600, my ancestor Don Pedro Gomez Duran y Chavez arrived in New Mexico with the second contingent of the original colonizers of New Mexico. He was from Valverde de Llerena, Spain. In the same wagon train was Isabel Bohorquez Baca, with her parents and siblings, from Mexico City. These two were destined to marry. In 1610 Don Pedro was one of the founders of Santa Fe.

The history of Santa Fe is imbued with family ties, religion, political strife, art -- the stuff that makes it the “city different.”
