Agency OKs Limits on Greenhouse Industry
Key elements of a county plan limiting growth of the Carpinteria Valley greenhouse industry were approved by the California Coastal Commission.
The plan, which will be reconsidered by the Board of Supervisors next month, also requires safety upgrades on rural roads where greenhouse employees on bicycles or walking often confront large trucks.
Flower growers have opposed the plan, saying it’s too restrictive. The plan includes setting a 2.7 million-square-foot cap on greenhouse development beyond the valley’s current 15 million square feet.
