Walker Walks and Cubs Sweep

Pinch-hitter Todd Walker drew a bases-loaded walk from Damaso Marte in the ninth inning Sunday night to give the Chicago Cubs a 2-1 victory over the cross-town White Sox and complete a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field. Derrek Lee homered for the Cubs against Mark Buehrle in the second inning, but Carlos Lee tied it with a ninth-inning home run off LaTroy Hawkins (2-1).

Texas 18, Houston 3 -- At Houston, Mark Teixeira and Hank Blalock became the first Rangers to hit grand slams in the same game. Teixeira also hit a solo shot in the eighth. Kevin Mench also had two homers among his career-high four hits, and Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run home run.

Philadelphia 5, Baltimore 2 -- At Philadelphia, Bobby Abreu homered and drove in three runs, and Eric Milton became the first 11-game winner in the National League. Abreu hit his 17th homer and had a two-run double for the East Division-leading Phillies. Milton (11-2) joined Boston’s Curt Schilling, Texas’ Kenny Rogers and Oakland’s Mark Mulder for most victories in the majors.

St. Louis 2, Seattle 1 -- Jeff Suppan (7-5) pitched four-hit ball into the eighth inning and Jim Edmonds threw out a runner at the plate in the fourth, helping the Cardinals complete a three-game sweep at St. Louis. They finished 11-1 in interleague play, the best in the majors in the eight years that the AL and NL have been playing, topping a 16-2 record by the Oakland A’s in 2002.

Colorado 10, Detroit 8 -- Vinny Castilla celebrated his 37th birthday with four RBIs and Royce Clayton also drove in four runs to help the Rockies tie a club record by erasing an eight-run deficit at Coors Field.

Atlanta 10, Boston 4 -- Derek Lowe (6-8) gave up eight runs in 4 1/3 innings at Atlanta, and the Braves used a nine-run fifth to hand the Red Sox their eighth loss in 11 games. They are 28-31 since April, and 18-23 on the road this season.

San Diego 7, Kansas City 1 -- David Wells had an impressive start at San Diego, but he and first baseman Phil Nevin were forced out with injuries. Wells (4-5) fouled a ball off his lower right leg in the sixth inning. He finished his at-bat, striking out, but didn’t go out for the seventh. Nevin had to leave with a possible cartilage tear in his right knee.

Arizona 6, Minnesota 2 -- Randy Johnson threw a five-hitter at Phoenix for his 10th victory and Al Pedrique got his first win as Diamondback manager. Shea Hillenbrand drove in three runs with a triple and home run. Johnson (10-6) struck out 10 and walked none.

Cincinnati 5, Cleveland 4 -- Tim Hummel singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning. Ken Griffey Jr. started the rally with a single. He advanced on Adam Dunn’s groundout, and Barry Larkin was intentionally walked. Hummel singled up the middle.

Florida 4, Tampa Bay 3 -- At Miami, A.J. Burnett (1-3) won for the first time in nearly two years, Miguel Cabrera hit his 20th homer and the Marlins ended a four-game losing streak. Burnett gave up six hits and three runs in 7 2/3 innings.

Montreal 6, Toronto 4 -- Shawn Hill got his first major league victory, pitching five strong innings at San Juan, Puerto Rico. He struck out six and yielded six hits and one run in his second start.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Pittsburgh 6, Milwaukee 2 -- At Pittsburgh, Chris Stynes drove in three runs with a homer and two-run double and the Pirates extended their longest winning streak since 1996 to nine games.
