Pirate Streak at 10
Kip Wells pitched eight shutout innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates won their 10th straight, 3-1, over the Marlins at Miami on Monday night.
The Marlins also lost World Series MVP Josh Beckett, who was put back on the disabled list after leaving the game because of a blister. Beckett, who hadn’t started since June 17 because of a lower back strain, gave up two earned runs and five hits in his 73-pitch, four-inning outing.
Philadelphia 6, New York 5 -- Pat Burrell had two hits and two RBIs for the Phillies at Philadelphia. One day after being selected to his ninth NL All-Star team, Tom Glavine (7-6) gave up six runs and 10 hits in six innings.
Atlanta 11, Montreal 4 -- Andruw Jones hit a three-run homer in a six-run first inning and Chipper Jones had four RBIs at San Juan, Puerto Rico. Paul Byrd (2-1) gave up three runs, two earned, and 10 hits in seven innings and Atlanta reached .500 for the first time since June 12.
St. Louis 4, Cincinnati 1 -- Edgar Renteria and Scott Rolen drove in two runs each at St. Louis. Jason Isringhausen recorded the last three outs for his 19th save in 23 chances, walking Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn before striking out Wily Mo Pena to end the game.
Milwaukee 1, Chicago 0 -- All-Star Ben Sheets struck out 12 in seven innings and Craig Counsell homered at Milwaukee.
