A former union representative at the Channel Islands Air National Guard base in Oxnard has been sentenced to 180 days in jail for embezzling $9,000, officials said Wednesday.

James David Torrez, 37, was also sentenced Tuesday to three years’ probation and ordered to pay restitution to the Assn. of Civil Technicians, Deputy Dist. Atty. Howard Wise said. Torrez was convicted of stealing money from the union from August 1998 to August 2003 while serving as president of the group, Wise said.

Torrez made about 38 unauthorized cash withdrawals and wrote checks to himself during this time, Wise said. The bank contacted the previous union president about the withdrawals and he in turn notified the U.S. Department of Labor, Wise said.
