Reports of Bird’s Demise Greatly Exaggerated

A bird once thought by some to be extinct has been discovered on the island of Cozumel off Mexico’s Caribbean coast, conservationists announced Friday.
The Cozumel thrasher, a 9-inch brown and white bird found only on Cozumel, once numbered about 10,000. Most died after Hurricane Gilbert in 1988.
