Meola Helps Wizards Hold On for Win, 1-0

Tony Meola earned his Major League Soccer-record 54th shutout and Matt Taylor scored in the 18th minute in the Kansas City Wizards’ 1-0 victory over D.C. United in front of 26,233 Saturday at Kansas City, Mo.

Davy Arnaud set up the goal for the Wizards (8-4-4) by stripping United defender Brian Carroll of the ball and quickly pushing forward toward to the right side of the penalty area. Arnaud outran Carroll and took a shot toward the far post.

The shot got past goalkeeper Troy Perkins and was about to roll in when Taylor, a rookie starting only his second game, dashed in and pushed it across the line.

United fell to 5-6-5.

MetroStars 2, San Jose 0 -- John Wolyniec and Amado Guevara scored second-half goals and the MetroStars (6-6-4) ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over the Earthquakes (4-6-5) in front of 13,174 at East Rutherford, N.J.

Goalkeeper Jonny Walker, who had given up 11 goals in his previous three games, got the shutout, although the unlucky Earthquakes had two shots bounce off the post. San Jose has lost three in a row.

Dallas 0, Columbus 0 -- Jon Busch made five saves to help the visiting Crew (5-5-4) tie the Burn (5-5-5) in front of 7,223 at Dallas.
